Music at Sinai

At Sinai Temple we enjoy a wide range of enriching musical experiences.

SHABBAT AND HOLIDAY SERVICES
The variety of innovative Friday night and Saturday Shabbat services at Sinai Temple expose us to a wonderful depth of musical experience. Music at our Reform Shabbat and holiday services is coordinated under the guidance of Martha Alwes, music director. Her piano accompaniment, along with a professional soloist who leads the congregation in singing, provides inspiring music at Friday evening services and at some Saturday morning B’nai Mitzvah services.

HIGH HOLIDAY MUSIC
In 2017, Sinai Temple was pleased to welcome Cantor Jennifer Seeger of Minneapolis as our guest cantor for the High Holidays. Cantor Seeger, who was trained at the Hebrew Union College’s Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music, sang at Erev Rosh Hashanah, First Day Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre, and Yom Kippur services held in the sanctuary.

FAMILY SERVICE
These services involve leadership by students in the Sinai Temple Hebrew and Religious school. The spirited song leading, based on contemporary melodies as well as classics by composers such as Debbie Friedman, is accompanied by the Sinai Family Folk Singers (SFFS): Andrea Klein, guitarist Larry Adelston, and percussionist Barbara Orden.

GROWTH AND RENEWAL
Growth and Renewal is a meditative service designed to enhance the spiritual experience of participants. Music and movement are integral to this unique prayerful Shabbat service. Music is led by the Sinai Family Folk Singers and special guests, including percussionist Rocky Maffit.

HAVA NASHIRA SERVICES
Bringing the best of current liturgical music and ruach to Sinai congregants through song, guitar and percussion, the Sinai Family Folk Singers select a universal theme as the focus for the service and encourage vocal participation from all. Sinai Family Folk Singers (SFFS) are Andrea Klein, guitarist Larry Adelston, and percussionist Barbara Orden. This service may be joined by special musical guests.

SHABBAT SINGERS
The Shabbat Singers, under the direction of Allison Fromm, encourage and support congregational singing and provide a path for people to find their way to Jewish spirituality through music and fellowship. The Shabbat Singers welcome adult singers of all backgrounds and experience levels to join and participate in Shabbat and holiday services, as well as at Jewish community events.

KOL HASHALOM
This student choir encourages students of all ages to connect to their Judaism through song. This choir will participate in High Holiday Family Services and other events and services throughout the year.

SHABBAT ROCKS
This 45 minute musical Shabbat service is an inviting and entertaining participatory service for adults and children of all ages. Led by Rabbi Alan Cook, Jessica Kopolow and guitarist Larry Adelston. (Begins at 6:30 PM one Friday night each month; please see calendar for dates.)
