High Holidays-2023

We are excited to be able to usher in the Jewish year 5784 in our newly renovated building. How wonderful it will be to have the opportunity to worship for the High Holidays together in our sacred home after a two-year absence.

Please enter for all services at the main (south) entrance facing Windsor Road. Masks are recommended for those who are worshipping with us in person.

We apologize those services taking place in the Davis Chapel, as well as our evening Sukkot and Simchat Torah experiences, will be in-person only.

There is a special password for High Holiday Zoom programming that was mailed out to all Temple members. Please call the Temple office if you need that password. If you are utilizing Zoom, you are invited and encouraged to join each service in advance; all rooms are scheduled to open at least ten minutes prior to the posted service start time.

Childcare During Services

We are pleased to offer options for our younger members during the High Holidays. Childcare will be provided for those services where there is sufficient demand (4 or more children registered). Evening childcare is available for children of all ages; morning childcare is designed for those who are below school age. Advance registration is required and must be received by September 8. This Yom Kippur service will be led from the Reform Machzor Mishkan HaNefesh. Rabbi Alan will lead the service with music from Cantor Marty Steinhouse. The service will include the afternoon service, Yizkor memorial prayers, and Neilah concluding liturgy.

Rabbi Jody will provide a service and holiday–themed programming for students in Kindergarten through sixth grade during Jewnior Congregation. Jewnior Congregation will be held on the first day of Rosh Hashanah (9/16) and on Yom Kippur (9/26) morning beginning at 10 AM, and will run concurrent to the Reform service.

Sunday, September 17, 2023, 3:00 PM Shofar Experience at Carle Park

Join Rabbi Jody and friends for a special shofar experience on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, Sunday, September 17. We’ll gather at 3 PM at Carle Park (400 W. Indiana St., Urbana) to sound the shofar, enjoy some apples and honey, and play a bit with Sinai Temple friends. Feel free to bring your own shofar to join in the fun! (Click for Map).

The Egalitarian Traditional Minyan will conduct a service for the first day of Sukkot featuring Hallel psalms and the waving of the lulav and etrog.

Sunday, October 1, 2023, 5:30 PM Sukkot Dinner, Service and Concert in the Sukkah

Join us for “Pizza in the Hut” (weather permitting) as we gather in Sinai Temple’s Sukkah for a delicious pizza dinner from Garcia’s Pizza in a Pan (with thanks to Temple member Ralph Senn). Following dinner, we’ll have a chance to shake the lulav and etrog, then join in a fun community art project facilitated by John Odum, art teacher at Carrie Busey Elementary School.

Saturday, October 7, 2023, 5:30 PM Dinner, Simchat Torah service, and Celebration of new Religious School students and newest Temple members!

Join us for our Simchat Torah extravaganza. We’ll begin with a freshly cooked dinner in celebration of the festival. Then we’ll honor both our newest Sinai Temple Religious School students, and our newest Temple members (those who have joined in the last three years).

We will cap off the evening in celebration of the Torah, as Mitch Harris leads us in dancing to the music of local Klezmer band Papashoy!
